I am interested in finding out more about this group and if it will have any events. I was a student with Marcel Muller in 1969 studying in Aix en Provence. I am interested in recovering some of the language skills that have lain dormant for the past 40+ years. It looks like the group has not had any activity for the past several months?

Chers amis, dear Friends, First of all I wish you a very happy new Year! May 2016 leave you all free of troubles of any kind and shower you with inner peace and a lovely family and group of friends!
VERY IMPORTANT: The Hourschool platform will no longer be in use. The two co-founders could no longer meet the demands of keeping it functioning well considering their huge professional demands. We now are using the Meet Up platform. It will be practical, if not as beautiful, and will be free of troubles. I hope that you will continue to be an interested member of our French speaking community and that you will join us in this new place. We intend to continue to publish all events that can be of interest to you concerning the French speaking world. Thank you for all the support you have given us al this time. Here is the link:
http://www.meetup.com/French-in-Ann-Arbor/

ALSO INTERESTING: Literati receives monthly many copies of France-Amérique, a publication that is now in FRENCH AND IN ENGLISH and can help all of you in getting stronger in reading French and increasing your vocabulary. The articles are extremely interesting. There is always something to learn about the French american connections and ways of viewing the world.
Again my gratitude and my best wishes!
Amicalement,
Mijo

Our French in Ann Arbor community has lost one of its beloved teachers and members, Professor Marcel Muller. He has enriched us with his wonderful literary salons held at Leonore Gerstein’s residence. Our many intellectual promenades with him let us meander through Baudelaire’s poetry and Marcel Proust’s “A la recherche du temps perdu”. We all loved his immense knowledge and his brilliant intellect. He shared his passions with us freely and generously. His obituary is in today’s Ann Arbor News. In the coming weeks there will be an announcement for a memorial at Muehlig Funeral Chapel. Our heartfelt condolences go to Leonore and his family.

Dear Friends, Chers amis, My breast cancer diagnostic at the beginning of June threw me for a loop. I have been unable to follow up on organizing a group trip to see "Antigone", the play by Sophokles, with French actress Juliette Binoche. So, I encourage you to get your tickets as this will be an exceptional evening. The translation is supposed to be excellent and is by a former U of M professor Anne Carson. Here are links that can interest you.

I will post the play for one date, but the show will last four nights between October 14 and 17.
I am doing fine and will come out of this victorious.
I thank you for your interest in French in Ann Arbor. The activities have slowed down, but it will pick up one of these days when my thoughts can be streamlined more. Warm thoughts to al of you.

Dear Mijo, I have enjoyed so much our French conversations on Mondays. I am very sad to say that I won't be able to attend any more of them in the month of June before we go to France on September 26th. I have to teach a workshop in the afternoon on Sept 14th and 21st. I'm really sad to miss your classes, which I enjoy so much! I will have to say goodbye until we return in the middle of October!

Juliette Binoche will be the star of Sophokles' "Antigone" at the Power Center in Ann Arbor. The show is on the University Musical Society's program. I am willing and happy to organize all those who want to come so that we all can get a discount. Here is what you need to know and do:
1. The dates of the show are October 14, 15, 16 and 17.
2. The show will be in English and is directed by a Dutch director Ivo van Hove
3. I will choose the specific date according to the discount I can receive, which will be between 15% and 25%.
4. Write to me as soon as possible to let me know how many people in your circles would like to come.
5. Once I receive more info on the prices normally between $30.00 and $70.00, I will let you know the day of the show and how much a ticket would cost.
6. Once the day and the ticket price are clear, I will ask you to send me a check.
RIGHT NOW THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO TELL ME IF YOU ARE INTERESTED AND HOW MANY PEOPLE EACH OF YOU IS BRINGING. THIS DOES NOT COMMIT YOU RIGHT NOW. DEADLINE IN THIS FIRST STEP OF THE PROCESS IS JUNE 6.

That is an exciting opportunity to watch a French icon on stage.
All my best to all of you

Dear Friends, / Chers amis,
If you have time tomorrow afternoon, come to the Michigan Theater to watch the French movie "The Jewish Cardinal" or "Le métis de Dieu". This film belongs to the rich list of movies offered in the Jewish Film Festival. It promises to be very interesting because Cardinal Lustinger, born Jewish, converted to catholicism and became a prominent figure in France and in the church. He never disavowed his Jewishness. The film apparently not only deals with religion, but also with the psychology of a person going in a direction that is not approved by a parent. We all will learn a lot. The movie is at 2:00pm. Join us! If I never had a chance to meet you, I would love to do so on that occasion. I will wait outside the theater between 1:30 and 1:50. I will wear navy blue pants with white polka dots. Looking forward to seeing you!

Dear Friends, I posted this text on FaceBook and wanted to share it with you also. Here it is: France will need to ask itself many good questions. So far, it has not. Why are we the European country that has the most young people going to learn Jihad? Why is our system exclusive and not inclusive? Why do we spend time making laws about who is wearing what on his/her head or around his/her neck to go to school? Why does it practically take a parlamentary debate to decide if mothers wearing a scarf can help with school field trips? Go to Greenhills School, Greenhills Alums, to learn a little bit and understand how this can work beautifully. I have had students in my classroom wearing some a kippah, others a scarf, and yet others a cross, it did not matter. It never mattered. Everyone goes to school feeling respected and does not feel the need to rebel. I always say that if countries could learn from one another and did not show so much chauvinism and pride, the world would be a better place. Why can't France learn how to handle diversity? It needs to badly do a crash course. And why can't the US learn about the principals and the benefits of a good health insurance for everyone? The last week has left me in an incredible upheaval. I am so ashamed that some of my Jewish friends question the well being of French Jews in France and consider recommending them to leave. This brings back very, very bad memories. And moreover, I don't blame Jewish people to feel that way. Fear is fear. I am also sorry for the number of young people in France who with a 10% unemployment are themselves seeing no future in their own country and feel totally disenfranchised. We know it is true. Yes, there are many more sides to this. But I have thought of all these questions for a long time and I have studied many of these topics in my classes because they were so serious and a part of France in its limitations. Thank you, my friends, for posting articles and your own views on this event. And I offer you my profound sadness and apologies.

Dear Friends, nine copies of the July-September issue of "France-Amérique" are available at Literati's. It is a very interesting publication that is written all in French. For some of you who feel more comfortable with reading than speaking, this is a good start for language review. Please, give your business to Literati so that they can feel encouraged to provide us with French periodicals and books. Right now there is one copy of the famous Belgian author Amelie Nothomb "Stupeurs et tremblements". A great read, in French, naturally!

Just a reminder to anyone interested, as I am, in All Things French, that I have a blog called Sandy's France. If you lose or forget the internet address, you can always Google that and you'll find your way. The link is: www.sandyschopbach.blogspot.com.
I put up a new posting almost every week-end.
The first post of every month is a recipe of something typically French and in season. I learned when I moved there that French cooks work with fresh products, although that's changing (sigh). I hope France never loses that talent.
July's recipe is salade nicoise. Take a look and see.
N.B. When a new posting is put up, the previous one just slides down the page, so scroll down. Or use the "year" and "month" headings on the right side to find older postings.

Authentic French cuisine in an unexpected location:

If you find yourself in the middle of nowhe... - ahem, I mean near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Leelanau County - be sure to check out Restaurant La Bécasse at 9001 S Dunns Farm Rd in Maple City, MI. (The address may also be listed as Burdickville or Glen Lake.) The Chef, Guillaume Hazaël-Massieux, was born in Paris but moved with his family to Guadeloupe, West Indies as a young child. He returned to France for boarding school and university and later graduated from the École des Arts Culinaires et de l'hotellerie in Lyon, France, now known as L'Institut Paul Bocuse. His food is influenced by his experiences in the West Indies, as well as by his mother's renditions of the country foods typical of her childhood home in the east of France:

Chef Guillaume also presides over Bistro Foufou at 118 Cass Street in Traverse City, if you want to try a slightly different take on French cuisine in a less unconventional location:

She will teach us (in English) how to make cassoulet, a classic from the southwest of France. Personally, I have always wanted to learn this dish. Chers amis, You might have missed Brigitte's latest post about her Holiday cookie baking class. Her class is in English and children would find it fun as well. Please read about the class and registration at the link below. If you do not know about Brigitte's teaching talents, you will love to find out. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Dear Friends, I reposted the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit at the Flint Institute of Art. It lasts until the end of December. We went to see it and thought that it was excellent. There are 150 pieces that are well explained. If you get the audio tape, you will hear that every work on the audio tour is introduced by an authentic song by the famous cabarets and café concerts singers of the time, Yvette Guilbert and Aristide Bruant being some of them. It is a very authentic way to set up the mood. In addition the museum is beautiful and pleasant. We can learn from its permanent collection that features quite a number of French artists and some German expressionists, something I also love.
We found it easy to go to the Institute by car. So, if you are looking for something to do with your family during the festive and busy month of December, Flint could be your destination.
Check this link for info as I am not sure that you got the class email:

Chers amis, just a clarification. When an event like a museum exhibit is posted, it is to inform you of cultural events that might be of interest to you. The website does not allow us to keep a post for the entire duration for the show. So, we post it a few times as a reminder. Everyone can go on their own time and with their own transportation. The post is never meant as a field trip. Thank you so much for your participation.
Bien amicalement, Mijo

Attention au parking pour le concert! PARKING FOR THE SEPTEMBER 12 CONCERT. Joseph Gurt found out that the only legal parking for the Sept 12 concert is as follows:
You turn left from Huron St to Jarvis st and continue to the traffic light, after which the you reach the EMU campus. On the far side of the light the first building on the left is the Alexander Music Building. Immediately after passing the light, and before getting to the building itself there will be an entrance on your left to a paid parking lot. Any other parking may result in a legal penalty.
Also consult the concert page. Hope to see you at what promises to be a delightful evening.

Dear Friends/ Chers amis,

Given the huge interest in language acquisition among our participants, French in Ann Arbor is offering more classes for beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Let me introduce you to Noémie Marciano-Kinzel, a Parisian native speaker, who is experienced in teaching French as a second language and has studied the science and art of teaching. Noémie will be teaching a beginners’ class called “French for Travelers” and an intermediate/advanced class called “Refresh your French”. She comes highly recommended. You will love learning with her.

I enjoyed yesterday's Refresh Your French class. I have to admit I am having difficulty refreshing my basic and more advanced grammar knowledge. I have books and audio lessons, which of course help, but is there someone local who actually teaches French grammar? I could enroll at one of the colleges, but I would be more interested in working with a tutor or small group. Merci beaucoup!

First my message will be in French and then, down below in English!

For the friends who did not understand completely my message, I wish you a very happy New Year and I thank you for your participation in Hourschool. The two classes on French cinema and Poetry require a quite advanced level of French. Suzanne's class on making baguettes, however, will be accessible to everyone. If you read her note on the class page, she mentions that she will teach one French grammar point and some vocabulary, but that English speakers should not shy away. To all of you, here is to a year of convivial meetings and learning more French and more about the French and francophone cultures.

Bien amicalement, Mijo

Welcome, dear friends, to our French section of Hourschool. I have many ideas to start and I know that you also will have many. In the context of the coming of the Parisian Theater, théâtre de la ville, I would like to suggest one or two evenings reading the Ionesco play, "Rhinocéros". Would it interest you? I will probably post a class. Please, make other suggestions.
